Zebulon Cougars Pursue Overall Wellness
Zebulon Elementary GT Magnet School kicked off the year on the right foot with a fun, interactive evening of apple-crunching, jump roping, wall climbing and plenty of opportunities to get moving at the school’s first-ever health fair. The action-packed event was planned as part of the school’s CAPOW (Cougars Are Pursuing Overall Wellness) program, which is funded by a three-year Wake to Wellness grant through the John Rex Endowment’s Healthy Weight Initiative.
Activity stations were set up for both children and adults. Families had the chance to try out the school’s Geo Motion Mats - movement-based learning equipment purchased with Wake to Wellness grant funds. The school uses the mats to engage students in multi-sensory activities for afterschool fitness clubs, physical education classes and rainy day, indoor fun.
Health fair attendees also received information about asthma, diabetes and nutrition. The school partnered with the Zebulon Parks and Recreation Department to provide information at the health fair about community classes and local, healthy resources. Blood pressure and body mass index (BMI) screenings were also available, and participants received printed BMI reports.
The health fair gave teachers, parents and students a chance to interact and learn together while focusing on student nutrition and family education.
