Zebulon Fights Food Desert Concerns

Less than a year after receiving a three-year grant from the John Rex Endowment, the Town of Zebulon opened a Farm Fresh Market in May 2015. The Zebulon Community Center is now transformed weekly for a Saturday market, where residents connect and select healthy foods for the week.

Zebulon NC Farm Fresh Market“With the new market, our community has easy access to fresh local food,” said Mayor Bob Matheny. “We were intentional to locate the market in front of the Zebulon Community Center where it’s visible from the street. Plus, our residents can visit the adjacent Zebulon Community Park.”

To further address both affordability and access, Zebulon Parks and Recreation secured SNAP/EBT and established WIC and senior voucher programs.

Municipalities are central to building healthier environments. The Town of Zebulon is one of six Wake County municipalities that received John Rex Endowment grant funds in 2014 to support healthy eating and active living opportunities for children and families.  Grantees receive technical support from Active Living By Design (ALBD) and Advocates for Health in Action (AHA).
